Hakone

by yuumeijanai on September 9, 2009

After a local train (Nikko – Utsuomiya), two shinkansen (Utsunomiya – Tokyo and Tokyo – Odawara) and a bus (Odawara – Hakone), we finally made it to our guesthouse, at which point I promptly crashed with a headache and a churning stomach. じゃあ、しょうがないね。Word on the street is that everyone else went out for dinner.

Yesterday morning we had an early start – 8 a.m. departure to catch a bus back down the mountain (be still, my churning stomach), onto a cable car that took us up another mountain, then onto a ropeway (chairlifts in an enclosed ‘gondola’, as one of the others called it – like the ones at Taronga Zoo), which took as to the summit.

The smell of sulfur was almost overpowering at times, and it sort of reminded me of something out of Lord of the Rings, with all the steam and rock and mist. The main attraction up here are the black eggs (黒玉子) – eggs cooked for an hour in the sulfur, then sold to curious travellers and superstitious folk who believe the ‘seven years longevity’ claim that gets bandied around. I’m sure they make a fortune from the local retirement villages…

After eggs were consumed (by people who were not me – eggs, ugh), there was a quick wander around the souvenir shop and then it was back on the ropeway and down to Lake Ashi (芦ノ湖) for a cruise across to central Hakone (箱根町). It was reasonably enjoyable, despite the cool, cloudy conditions… at least until it started raining. Clearly, the weather gods were not smiling on us.

We disembarked on the far side of the river, wandered up through the cedar forest and then split up for a free afternoon. Mum and I spent the time with Nic (from Perth) and Jen (from Calgary) – first at lunch at a little homestyle restaurant (cheap and tasty fare), then across the road to Narukawa Art Gallery (成川美術館). It was a small collection of Japanese impressionist-style works, located in a building on the side of the mountain, with an amazing view out of the lake. We had coffee and cake in the cafe, as this had the best view in the whole place.

After we finished up there, we headed to what was probably the main even of our day, the Open Air Museum (彫刻美術館). It had an amazing collection of more modern art – including a Picasso Museum – and a number of sculptures, including some Rodin. Arguably the best part was the interactive installation art/kids playground.

It might have said under thirteen, but that didn’t stop a heck of  lot of over thirteens from getting in there and trying it out. Good times were had by all.

There was a fair bit we didn’t get to, thanks to closing time, including a foot spa (which would have been gratefully partaken in, with the amount of walking we’ve been doing lately. Ten thousand steps a day hasn’t been a problem – we’re racking that up by lunchtime most days.

Due to a slight problem with Nic’s Hakone FreePass (it got caught up with the money she gave me for the museum entry, and ended up in my wallet), we missed the last bus back to the ryokan and had to take a taxi. I’m pleased to say that price-wise, they’re on par with Australia. I guess the reports of ‘exorbitantly expensive’ are coming either (a) in comparison to public transport or (b) from Americans, whose taxi fares are significantly cheaper than ours. We split it between four people, so it was only 500円 each, and faster than the bus, too!

That evening we ate out at another tavern-style restaurant. The food was tasty (美味しい!) and the serving sizes very generous. I was still pretty full from lunch, and couldn’t get through all of it.

And there our one and only full day in Hakone. This morning it time to pack up and head off to our next destination – Takayama.

P.S. Mum would like it mentioned that it’s rude to read and not comment. Just sayin’.

Just being ‘ not rude’ . I reckon 60 mins most nights on Skype gives me complete exemption anyway!!

Weather looks OK (actually, from my work desk, it looks brilliant!), gallery looks good, cafe view looks great, cake looks magnificent!! Sorry i can’t eat it on a number of fronts.

Haven’t looked at the rest of the blog yet. But great to have it up and running, Laura.

Lots o’ Love

Hi Guys,

Sorry for not commenting earlier on the Nikko article – it was late last night, especially after our Skype session, and I was supposed to be heading off to bed – especially after my chemo day. Oh well!

Dave and I are loving all the details and the photos. I would like the photos to be linked to a larger version – is that possible? or too much trouble?

Hope your stomach has stopped churning, Laura. That cake was very daring of you! Can’t say I like the colour though.

With all the walking, I hope you took comfortable shoes with you. Or have you bought some of those Japanese sandals to go with your souvenir kimonos?

I’ve printed off your blogs for Grandma to read.

Can’t wait for the next installment.

Keep safe and well, and enjoy the rest of the trip.

Love Ros (and Dave)

Hello! The one day I’m home and you don’t skype. For shame…

Looks friggin awesome. Good photography!

Bags not eating the eggs.

Hi Kath and Laura, Love reading about what you’re up to. The photos are beautiful – can we make them any bigger? Tried clicking on them but nothing happened. The Open Air museum looks amazing. Not sure about that pink color on the cake though. Now I’m off to check out where you are on a map of Japan. Keep on having fun and keep safe, Love Di

Hey Pa,

It gives you a partial exemption. A ‘hi, I read this’ will suffice in future :P

Hi Ros,

Ah, chemo is a more than reasonable excuse for not commenting. You’ve Skyped, too. Re the photo situation, I’m still new to the whole Wordpress thing, so I haven’t figured out a way to make the pics larger. I’ll be putting them on Flickr or somesuch fairly soon, so full size will be available then. I would have uploaded them elsewehere earlier, but we’re still on tour (rockstars, we are) with limited free time and limited internet in non-metro areas. Plus, I tend to drop like a rock at the end of the day!

Hope you’re feeling well, and less tingly from that lowered medicine dosage!

Islamiah,

You suck. Why do you choose the date we’re in an internet black hole a tiny mountain village to come home??? Fail. Also, what’s the good word on Paolo?

P.S. What is with Japan’s obsession with eggs? One of the girls on the tour asked our guide where they’re hiding all the chickens that are producing them all! I haven’t seen a chicken since I got here…

Hey Di,

Good to here from you! 久しぶりですね〜 (It’s been a while, hasn’t it?). As I said to Ros above, Wordpress isn’t being too amenable to click-and-make-it-larger photography, and I’ve had limited time and next access to try it. Will upload to Flickr or something soon, so you can slideshow it at a reasonable size!

The cake was good – pink included. They put a lot of effort into the desserts here; they don’t seem to taste cheap and synthetic like a lot of the offerings at home…

Unlike Dad, I’m not exempt from long replies… But do 4am starts get me off the hook?? I’m always asleep when you skype :(

I’m envisioning mass death and destruction if you attempt to remove a piece of the jenga…

Have fun you crazy kids

PS. Has Mum asked anyone their name yet?

admin September 13, 2009 at 10:33 pm

Ah, I think 4am gives you a partial exemption.

There would probably be death and destruction – or at least pain and a big mess – if you removed a piece of that jenga.

Yes, name asking has apparently happened, mostly because Mum and I split up and do our own things sometimes. So thankfully I don’t have to experience it.

P.S. Planning on being awake during Skype time at any stage?

Tickets bought – seats in the circle row L i believe, so they should be making their way through the postal system as we speak.

Make a new entry already.

I’M A VERY BUSY PERSON, I’LL HAVE YOU KNOW :P

I’m working on a post for Takayama, but I’m packing for Kyoto at the mo… Will try and have it done tonight. Maybe. Buzzer Beat, SMAP X SMAP, News Zero and Arashi no Shukudai-kun are all on this evening, so I can’t promise I won’t get epically distracted. Mondays are pretty awesome for telly.

Why are you giving me ticket info here and not email or Facebook? o.O
